WebGhost Marks. Shadowing or Pattern Soiling. These are all names for lines which can be seen on ceilings of the upper level in the house. The lines run where the ceiling joists are located. The same dark markings can also form along the ceiling edge. They are caused by uneven or missing attic insulation. WebGhosting can happen on ceilings because of gaps in insulation – where exposed joists or attic rafters are allowing cooler air to get near the ceiling, which then causes condensation that attracts the dust and dirt. This same process can happen around the studs on exterior walls, or anywhere else with a large variance in temperature.
